Just can't figure out these two. Please and thanks.
1.
The demand function for a certain brand of CD is given by the following p is the wholesale unit price in dollars and x is the quantity demanded each week, measured in units of a thousand.
p = -0.01x^2 - 0.2 x + 33
Determine the consumers' surplus if the wholesale market price is set at $9/disc. (Give your answer correct to 2 decimal places.)
2.
Suppose an investment is expected to generate income at the following rate measured in dollars/year for the next 3 yr.
R(t) = 200,000
Find the present value of this investment if the prevailing interest rate is 8%/year compounded continuously. (Give your answer correct to 2 decimal places.)
I'm almost 20 years old - been in community college for 3 years now, and thus far, college seems positively useless. My ultimate goal at this time is to get enough income to comfortably start a family and own a home(if you can really call a 30 year loan ownership).
So now I feel that I have a few options:
A. Drop out of school, and start working full time - I already have a job, and they want me full time. If I did that, I could be making 33K/yr + overtime in the technology field as a call-center manager. Don't get me wrong, I don't dislike my job - it's actually quite fun, but I definitely wouldn't be there if they weren't paying me. I've been there for 2+ years now, and have worked my way up to that pay rate. Eventually, I will get further raises and such, but I doubt that I will ever get over $45k/yr - a decent amount, but not exactly within my standards for "living comfortably." Plus, if anything were to happen to this job, I wouldn't be able to find a comparable paying job right off the bat; I'd have to work my way up AGAIN at another company.
B. Keep working part time, and keep going to community college for Audio Engineering - my "real" passion. The problem is, once I'm out of college(and my parents aren't supporting me anymore,) I don't know what I will do with this "degree." Most audio engineering work is done by contract - (grossly oversimplified)someone calls and says "my band wants a CD of our song" so I(the engineer) rent out a studio for 4 hours, come in, record the band, and give them a CD. Maybe they'll be back - maybe not. What I'm getting at is, this profession will never make me any (reliable/predictable/salary)money, and I've accepted that. Not only will I probably never make enough money to live comfortably with this profession, the classes I'm taking for it are a complete joke. 90% of what I've learned has been from self teaching, reading any text I can get my hands on, and just exploring/practicing on my own - this thought is reinforced when I hear the questions the other students in class ask - it's like they are so clueless, they don't even know what to ask. Luckily, in my almost 3 years at a 2 year college, I have completed all of my core classes, so I could:
C. Drop Audio Engineering and go to a 4 year college to get a 4 year degree, and become a corporate pawn like my mom and dad did. I would most likely become a programmer. This was actually my original plan in college, and I already have some programming experience - which is initially why I got a job where I work now. The problem is, in programming, most of the jobs themselves flat out suck... Programming is just slightly more predictable than audio engineering; people contact you and say "Hey I need on my forum site - I'll pay you $300 to design and implement it." If you get lucky, maybe you'll get hired on as a salary or wage worker - but chances are, I would be getting hired to build some new system that the company needs - and once that's up and running, they only need 1 programmer around to maintain the system. All the programming jobs I've found that are true salary or wage jobs don't want straight out of college programmers - actually, most care more about your experience and actual knowledge than they do about degrees - half of the jobs I've looked at for programming don't even mention a degree. Even if I decide to become a programmer, I don't know what degree I would need. There's all sort of computer science and computer engineering degrees, but looking at the curriculum, I don't see how any of this would land me a programming job when the job description reads "Must have 2+ years experience working in ."
So then I guess the other option is to :
D. Find a different career path... Honestly, I've searched high and low, and can't really think of anything else I would rather do(that wouldn't require 6+ years of college) besides programming or audio engineering. I definitely don't see myself working in a call center for the rest of my life.
So what do you guys think I should do? Are there any other options I'm missing? Thanks for the info PE2008. Looking into hartford now..
As for the other replies - If you are just spammers - please gtfo. If you are seriously trying to sell me a loan, don't bother. Money to get my education isn't the issue - getting an education that will make a decent amount of money is the problem...
I want to move some of my savings to an account with a better rate of return. My plan is to move $10,000 into a 5 yr CD at 3.14%. Currently it is sitting in a savings account earning 1.14%. It is possible that I will need this money in less than the 5 year term, but assuming that interest rates stay steady for even 1 year I figure I will be ahead even with a early withdrawal fee of 6 months interest.
So I figure the only risk to doing this is if interest rates rise significantly during the next 12 months. Am I correct on this? Any opinions?

I'm am definitely a fan of the mac, but i have heard really good things about alienware, and the hardware I could get for the same price as a mac is unmatchable. The thing that makes me iffy is the weight, the durability, ease of use, portability, how long it'll last, and the resell value. I've never actually even seen a alienware in real life, but it looks pretty awesome. I've had a macbook pro thought and they are pretty amazing. I'm not really worried about the price and whether I'd even be gaming on it, since I am a little more of a student and picture/movie editor that a computer gamer. Is alienware even good for anything other than gaming? I just wanted a second opinion, so your comparisons and what not would be really helpful.
So this is the story, I own a Dell Insperon (not sure of the model) and it recently broke down to such a level that it wont turn on, has a blue screen of death (BSOD), wont allow me to reload Windows Vista, or repair the computer, and has smoke coming out of it. So Being the dipshit that I am, I went and called Dell customer service, and as everyone knows is a pain. The guy was okay, helped me out somewhat but in the end my computer went six feet under.
Now I feel like a fish out of water (again) just like I was a few years ago. So Simply, put I need a new computer. I was looking at the Mac Book Pro 17' Screen and I was pretty pleased with what I saw, its looks cool, has what I want, and I am an owner of an Iphone. Mac owners that I know are pretty pleased, but others I talk to are very negative about it.
My friends recommend I get another Dell, (not happening) toshiba (Maybe) or a Alienware. I looked these up and Alienware is a gaming computer, Ofcourse it does have some of the most advanced drivers and graphic cards.
All I need my computer to do is handle my music and College. I need a computer for Itunes with alot of memory and processor power for the burning, loading etc. that is fast and efficient, long life span, not alot of hassles and has the standard things like Microsoft word, Excel, Power Points, etc.
I customized the Alienware and it came put to about $4000 and some change. The Mac costs around $2400.
PLEASE HELP ME@@@! lol. I need to figure this out before the holidays.

The 2 cards with $0 balance:
1.) $2100 available and only pay roughly $8.00/month for fraud detection
2.) $1500 available and pay around $10.00/month for a payment protection
The other card has the $1300 balace but has a 1 yr interest rate that I plan on paying off during that time. I currently have around $6000 cash in combination of checking, savings, and a CD.
The clincher is the 2 cards that have the $0 balace I have had for over 5 years. I do not earn a lot right now and am just trying to budget better without harming my credit score. The first card does have a way higher interest rate. The second one has a rewards program, but not the first one. The card carrying the $1300 is a 1% interest rate for 1 year. Is it really not a big deal to remove the payment/fraud protection. I do a lot of traveling and am always cautious with protecting my cards.
this computer is from alienware. i need a laptop that will last me for 5 - 8 years. coz as most alienwares users know an alienware doesnt come that cheap. so if you could just give me a yes or no answer that would be better btw these specs only cost me around $3369(cad).

Best low/no risk investment for long term?
Hi! I'm heading off to college and have accrued about $10,000 from working and all that good stuff. My parents are paying for my education and have told me to save my money for the future.
Right now, I have the money stored in an online savings account earning 1.55%/yr (it was close to 4% when the economy was better), but I've decided that I'd like to invest it in something with a higher-yield since I don't need the money on hand.
I've looked into:
Online CD's: 1 year at 2%, I'd ladder them every 3 months putting about 20% ($2000) of my money in each CD. Guaranteed by the FDIC.
Treasury Bills: 52-week at about 0.47%. Pathetically low, these are out. Treasury notes (longer term) are also still lower than the online CD rates.
Are there any other investments that have higher yield but still low risk? Are online CDs always better than Treasury Bills? Perhaps I'd be interested in something that had a low risk in the long term if it had a much higher expected yield.
Thanks!Re Zzyzyx: (BTW I saw such a road in Cali) Yeah, that period is rather long, and for such long periods I'd hope for a higher yield (since risk should naturally be lower with such a long timespan)
Ultimately, I want to Diversify my Portfolio using it, where the higher the Sortino Ratio for each of the asset classes -> gets Proportionally Higher Percentages...
And, where the Risk Free Rate = 2% (the average 1 yr FDIC insured CD at Bankrate.com - Nationally)
And, where the Expected Return (1 yr) = depends on the Stock or asset class. However, the LT average for it, would be related to Earnings Growth, P/E, and Dividend Yield (for example) as well as the Fundamentals.
And, where the Downside Risk = related to Volatility of the Stock or asset class.
I got a new laptop as a gift. I want to know if this is a good system? Rate this out of 10.

Ok plz bare with me. I’m buying a new laptop and I’m planning on keeping for 3 years or more. I want a quality laptop so its not slow in three years and id hate to upgrade because of it. I want to know if this laptop is worth the money or a waste. My current laptop is really crappy so I learned to spend some money for quality cuz what seems good now WILL suck in the future especially at the rate that technology ages. I have multiple promotions to get this price including certain employee discounts from a friend of mine. Also keep in mind that the warranty itself is like $300.

It seems kinda pricey but isn’t it a high quality laptop that should function well for 3 yrs or so. Does it seem like its worth the money?

I could put in about 25k- I have a CD maturing. I can tie it up for 1 yr. or so. I need it to be FDIC insured but I want to get a good return- ideally 4% or higher. IT DOES NOT HAVE TO BE A CD but that would be fine.
