Hi All I am doing my partners self assessment online with HMRC. He is a bricklayer and the company who he is subcontractor to pays 20% tax to CIS. What i need to know is what he can claim on eg..for fuel does he put 40p per mile for however many miles he has travelled for business or just what he has paid out in fuel (which he has VAT receipts for), also what portion of household bills can he claim for eg 10%,5% etc etc. He also didnt have a van to start and ended up buying one a couple of months after he became self employed can he put this down? i am a bit confused but want to help as much as i can therefore any help from you guys would be most appreciated. Thanks Heather, UK

We currently have a Tory government and their toady Libcon stooges trying to outdo each other to sting the poor of this country out of their hard earned cash, take their jobs, and then ridicule the victims, and all because their w...banker friends stung the country for £800 Billion - bonuses and champers all around ! Yet its the very rich of this country, not the long suffering poor, who could wipe the entire national debt clean overnight with a one off top 10% asset tax. The personal wealth of the top richest 10% of the UK is £4000 billion (45% of the nations total wealth). A one tax on this super group say no more than VAT , say 20%, would yield to the treasury £800 Billion - exactly the same sum that is now the national debt. Of course once the debt was paid off, there would be no interest charges so the government would have an extra £70 Billion a year to build hospitals and schools etc they could even put a few Billion aside to pay back the benevolent super rich. So why are the government not approaching the mega rich of this country, and why are the mega rich who are apparently so loyal to the country not queueing up to give to us all a small proportion of there massive assets ? Source: Greg Philo - The GuardianKristel - err think you might be just a tad misguided on that one mate

One of the basic principles in taxation is "NO tax can be levied on another tax". But Meralco, since 2005 has been collecting from their customers a 10% (later they raised it to 12%) VAT on (passed on) Local Franchise Tax, which they hide in our bills under "VAT on Distribution Rev & Subs". This makes every meralco customer overtaxed by at least 0.078% (12% of 0.65%), I think. I'm really not sure if this is perfectly legal based on the RVAT law ... or moral, or.... if they ever remit it to the govt.

David Cameron has quickly decided to raise the VAT up to 20% whilst in Japan it may take a few more years before the government will finally be able to raise the consumption tax from 5% to 10%. How come the UK prime minister can decide a tax change so quickly? Does the system allow him to have much stronger power than the Japanese prime minister?

I went to a restaurant in Hyderabad today. When they presented the bill, it had a service tax charge of 10%, and on top of that, a VAT of 14.5%. this seemed very weird and looks like a rip off. I asked the manager and he mumbled an unsatisfactory response. can someone please clarify. thank you

We in Britain are being told we all have to suffer to start re-couping the loss the whole country helped towards. I knew it was coming over 4 years ago, i spent what i had with hard cash and no credit. I spoke out against mass immigration 10 years ago and was told to shut up! look how far we've come since then. Nothing in the banks but IOU's and good will, the government coffers are empty. Labour spent 893 billion last year 893 billion of somebody elses money that's needs repaying with interest. I hate waste, i pay my council tax and have my bin emptied every two weeks. I get no rebate for it, i won't win citizen of the year but i'm not happy about being told i have to tighten my belt just so somebody else can loosen theirs. Why are we still shipping in immigrants? It costs more money to take an immigrant in than what they give back to the economy. A genuine labour shortage yeah they pay back and deserve a pat on the back and bonuses. But 60 years was along time ago, now immigrants economic migrants have no purpose in a tax rich VAT laden economy crunched capitalist society. What are we supposed to pay them with when our own are struggling to survive?IRS: you would never allow that to happen, if there was a serious crunch the USA would not allow people to just pour in like what we had to suffer in western Europe especially Britain. Texas or Alaska is the biggest state, could they cope with 3 million a year intake from overseas? fuckin sure they would be loading up their moose gunsOne shot i have nothing left, i'm down to my last 30 quid. I feel like blowing it round the bar. They have a wii and do free stew before 4 pm. C'mon as a sniper what would you do? take the shot or run away and hide when the wife comes home?

i am a real estate broker, aside from the 10% withholding tax, should i also pay forthe 12% E-VAT?

The Euro's w/ the IMF just gave Greece 110 Billion Euros (to save them from financial collapse)in exchange for draconian measures that have the recipients of their SOCIALIST NANNY STATE rioting in the streets and tossing gas bombs at police. These measures include: A huge cut in government ENTITLEMENT PROGRAMS, a VAT tax (a federal sales tax) of 23%, an increase in the retirement age of 14 YEARS!!!, GOVERNMENT WORKERS LOSE TWO MONTHS PAY, and tax raises on such items as gasoline, ciggs, and alcohol of 10% Not a pretty picture for the folks in Greece! because all their friends in the fiscal institute are saying that they should increase taxes by 6p in the pound which would mean someone on take home pay of £300 weekly would pay an extra £18 per week. this on top of their plan to increase vat to 20% will have a massive effect on working class people and will probably lead us into a recession so deep we will never recover. although I think the liberals are a bit on the soft side at least their £10'000 allowance before tax will make poorer people better off so I am considering voting for them now as a hung parliament will be better for us untill these banks have been sorted out.

Some people were saying that with a 1% of VAT tax the Govt will raise $100 billion a year in new Revenue, so if it's 10% that will be $1 trillion a year. Makes me wonder if the Govt will do away with some taxes such as the death tax. Lower income tax or even do away with capital gains taxes. Some say that Govt could introduce a VAT tax of up to 20% which will bring it $2 trillion more in revenue per year. Makes me wonder if they will stop spending or just increase taxes?

Gas station owners expressed concern yesterday at news that the government is considering hiking the tax on heating oil to make it the same as that on other forms of fuel, a measure that would also lead to households’ heating bills doubling.

The Easter Bunny has been hopping up and down Bangkok's expressways this week. No, I haven't been partaking of any illegal substances other than that bottle of Australian Shiraz I smuggled into the country without paying extra sales tax. What could the Easter Bunny possibly have in common with the tangled web of tang-duans that strangle my beloved Bangkok?

Gordon Brown has told his allies and former aides not to go public in criticising the version of events in Tony Blair's memoirs, 'A Journey' - but they have briefed 'The Sunday Telegraph'. Patrick Hennessy reports

Conservatives say the former PM's memoir offers a clear endorsement of the coalition government's plans to cut the deficit The Conservatives today claimed an unlikely ally in Tony Blair after the former prime minister warned in his memoirs that campaigning against "Tory cuts" would consign Labour to the political wilderness. Two ministers said Blair's comments amounted to an endorsement of the ...
