Is business-as-usual truly above government regulation? Why is it that some businesspeople feel that they are above the law? I understand if you own something, it is your perogative to do with it what you want to do with it. You are free to make money however you wish, especially if it was your money invested. But I get confused as to where the line is drawn. Some companies, mostly top-hat, fat-cat and corporate, believe that they are above regulation. When you accuse these people of being fascist (for instance; opinionated Yahoo! moderation staff) they have nothing of it. They don't even disagree, I've had this conversation twice before with different businesses. They feel like it is their business and so they can do whatever they want. Any business on American Soil doesn't have that paradigm. Tops Friendly Markets, Wegmans, Circuit City, Convenient Stores, Footlocker, Malls, McDonalds... etc, all of these businesses follow some sort of regulation. But business not on American Soil (Or any other soil, such as euro or canadian) feel like their server and their business is their country, so no one should have to poke around in how they do business and tell them what to do. It sounds all nice on paper and when you say it, "Stay out of my business", but If I am stabbing someone to death in an empty alley, and you are passing by, I hope you have the decency to stand up for me and defend me from being attacked. I feel like it's the same thing here. When we talk about regulation, from a liberal perspective, there is always the GOP that acknowledges the problem but never wants to do anything to solve it. "Let the Market Regulate itself.". Well, here is your big chance; how in the HECK are you going to accomplish letting the market "regulate itself"? What, like Video Game Consoles that drop from 500 to 200 after 3 or 4 years? Well I suppose that is better than waiting 10 years for the lobbyists and the corporate elite to stop picking their nose. Where is the line drawn? At what point do you say, "Hey, You can't do that." Because it's honestly beyond ridiculous. We may be a free country, but every single person reading this now has a boss, every single one of us has at least 1 parent, and every single person here has at least 1 person they answer to in business and in life. But this sort of business paradigm believes that it is above law, that it is above the dictations of sovereignty. As Americans, we uphold a higher standard of living, even if only in theory. People are not supposed to be getting away with bloody murder, especially only for the money. I know democrats don't really care, they just want to get elected, but that is not the topic of this discussion. I know BO is going to form some sort of regulation committee, but that is not what I want to talk about. I really just want to cut the fat and talk it out with other people because the fat-cats will always be too eager to toss the runaround. Assuming you could tell banks and other such adversaries; "You can't do that.", How would you even do that, considering state and federal attourney generals have tried in the past (i.e. capital one & the State AG of Minnesota) have utterly failed. How is regulation at this point even possible after having gone through so many decades of letting certain few specific businesses do whatever the heck they want? Self-Regulation is not an real answer. I want a REAL answer. I want some Defense & Protection from my nannystate.
