THIS promises to be the worst Labor Day in the memory of most Americans. Organized labor is down to about 7 percent of the private work force. Members of non-organized labor — most of the rest of us — are unemployed, underemployed or underwater. The Labor Department reported on Friday that just 67,000 new private-sector jobs were created in August, while at least 125,000 are needed to keep up with the growth of the potential work force. The national economy isn’t escaping the gravitational pull of the Great Recession. None of the standard booster rockets are working: near-zero short-term interest rates from the Fed, almost record-low borrowing costs in the bond market, a giant stimulus package and tax credits for small businesses that hire the long-term unemployed have all failed to do enough. That’s because the real problem has to do with the structure of the economy, not the business cycle. No booster rocket can work unless consumers are able, at some point, to keep the economy moving on their own. But consumers no longer have the purchasing power to buy the goods and services they produce as workers; for some time now, their means haven’t kept up with what the growing economy could and should have been able to provide them. This crisis began decades ago when a new wave of technology — things like satellite communications, container ships, computers and eventually the Internet — made it cheaper for American employers to use low-wage labor abroad or labor-replacing software here at home than to continue paying the typical worker a middle-class wage. Even though the American economy kept growing, hourly wages flattened. The median male worker earns less today, adjusted for inflation, than he did 30 years ago. But for years American families kept spending as if their incomes were keeping pace with overall economic growth. And their spending fueled continued growth. How did families manage this trick? First, women streamed into the paid work force. By the late 1990s, more than 60 percent of mothers with young children worked outside the home (in 1966, only 24 percent did). Second, everyone put in more hours. What families didn’t receive in wage increases they made up for in work increases. By the mid-2000s, the typical male worker was putting in roughly 100 hours more each year than two decades before, and the typical female worker about 200 hours more. When American families couldn’t squeeze any more income out of these two coping mechanisms, they embarked on a third: going ever deeper into debt. This seemed painless — as long as home prices were soaring. From 2002 to 2007, American households extracted $2.3 trillion from their homes. Eventually, of course, the debt bubble burst — and with it, the last coping mechanism. Now we’re left to deal with the underlying problem that we’ve avoided for decades. Even if nearly everyone was employed, the vast middle class still wouldn’t have enough money to buy what the economy is capable of producing. Where have all the economic gains gone? Mostly to the top. The economists Emmanuel Saez and Thomas Piketty examined tax returns from 1913 to 2008. They discovered an interesting pattern. In the late 1970s, the richest 1 percent of American families took in about 9 percent of the nation’s total income; by 2007, the top 1 percent took in 23.5 percent of total income. It’s no coincidence that the last time income was this concentrated was in 1928. I do not mean to suggest that such astonishing consolidations of income at the top directly cause sharp economic declines. The connection is more subtle. The rich spend a much smaller proportion of their incomes than the rest of us. So when they get a disproportionate share of total income, the economy is robbed of the demand it needs to keep growing and creating jobs. What’s more, the rich don’t necessarily invest their earnings and savings in the American economy; they send them anywhere around the globe where they’ll summon the highest returns — sometimes that’s here, but often it’s the Cayman Islands, China or elsewhere. The rich also put their money into assets most likely to attract other big investors (commodities, stocks, dot-coms or real estate), which can become wildly inflated as a result. ... I bought my first house in US last winter and went through every hassle trying to take advantage of the tax credit. I took a forclosed house and took line of credit to fix it hoping that my credit would help to pay it back. After 6 months of delay, IRS has denied it due to my house in Canada. It turned out that their software automatically flags you as home owner if you have claimed it in US tax which I did in 2007 and 2008 as I was working in States and paying taxes in both US and Canada. What would you suggest I do?

My fiance cannot find a job. He has been looking for over a year and has applied for hundreds of jobs and he still can't find one full time job. He has applied for jobs every possible way- tons of recruiters, job websites, linked in, twitter, facebook, in person etc. I was hoping that an IT professional could look at his CV and give us some feedback. At this point we aren't sure if he should continue job hunting, or if he needs more skills. He is looking for any entry level IT position. Below is a copy of his CV. Any input on what he can do to get a job would be greatly appreciated. We are just tired of him doing the same thing over and over again and not getting any results. Thank you! I received an audit from the IRS for the 2008 tax year. I didn't claim a 2007 1099g from the state of AZ for the amount of $3577. Isn't a state refund tax free? I was messing around with the 2009 tax year software and I entered that amount in the 1099g area, and it didn't change my refund amount at all. Help??By the way, I don't think I have ever itemized my deductions. I'm pretty sure I always go with the standard deduction. I only have ever claimed my son and my mortgage interest.

I became permanent resident of US in 2007, But I had my 2 semesters left for completing undergraduate study back to Bangladesh, that's why I applied for re-entry permit and I got that. So I went back to Bangladesh and completed my undergrad study. I got back in US on july,2009. Now I got accepted in IIT, Chicago in MS program. But I need to apply for FAFSA. But I didn't file any tax return and I don't have any W-2 forms because I didn't do any particular job in US. I spend total 7-8 months in US. I worked as a freelance software developer there and did some small projects. Now what should I do? Am I eligible for FAFSA? Can anyone help me with this please?

Is there anything out there that is free to use???

I need to file for tax years 2007 and 2008. According to what I have calculated using software online, I am due a refund for both years. However, I am not sure it's worth it to me to pay $50/year for a combined state/federal filing. I would like to learn how to do this on my own. I have had several jobs (multiple W2s for each year). Lived in a state that charges income tax for part of the year (California) and a state that doesn't charge income tax (Nevada). Or, conversely, does anyone have any suggestions for free prior year tax filing software? Thanks in advance.Addition: I also moved around quite a bit so I requested the IRS to send me a printout of my account. This paperwork arrived a few days ago. When I file the prior year return, do I just send back the paperwork the IRS sent to me, in lieu of the original W2s (which I do not have and some I cannot get)?

$1700 (this price includes tax and shipping) - I asked this question before but I wasn't very specific. So I copied and pasted the specifics for the laptop below. I don't want to know if I'm getting a deal (I know it's not the cheapest out there), I just want to make sure I'm not paying waaay too much. A lot of the little things this laptop had are important to me like the backlit keyboard, 10 key pad, style, and 17" screen (plus the touch software is nice) and I found it hard to find these all on another laptop I liked. Thanks for all your help, I don't know jack about computers so I feel lost in all these numbers and computer terms. I have a diploma from a Computer Systems Technology in 2007. Currently, I'm attending an university and will be graduating with a Computer Science B-Sc in mid-2010. A client wants me to build a software system that interacts with an Excel worksheet. My client works at a Wealth Management firm. The software will be used by wealth management advisors, managers, and logging coordinators. I've planned to build the software in C#/.NET. I've done quite a bit of research. On average, an undergrad freshman pursuing as a software developer will most likely earn $50,000 per year (before taxes) with 0 to 2 years of experience. A salary of $50,000 is about $24 per hour. I'm thinking of charging approximately $36, but some blog website suggest following the "two-times" or "three-times" rule-of-thumb. All of these numbers are in Canadian dollars. Can someone suggest to me what hourly rate II should be charging my client?

A legal copy of the tax software Taxcut 2007 is on www.download.com for free. I was wondering if a legal copy of Taxcut 2008 is also available somewhere?
